Cutting Power

Craftsman V20 3-Inch Cut-Off Tool

The Craftsman 20V 3-inch cut-off tool can rip through a variety of materials such as metal, drywall, fiber cement, plastic, tile, and even stone. Its brushless motor and variable speed trigger produce a no-load speed of 20,000 RPMs. Since this tool is mainly designed for cutting thinner material, it only has a 3/4-inch max cutting depth. With that said, thatโ€™s more than enough to handle many of the materials Iโ€™ve already mentioned.

Cutting drywall

Whatโ€™s interesting is that it features a forward and reverse mode, which would be unusual for a circular saw, but actually serves a very useful purpose with this cut-off tool. This gives you the ability to direct sparks and debris in the most convenient direction. It also allows you to clear debris, reduces the possibility of a kickback, and increases control while cutting.

Size and Weight

Craftsman CMCM300 profile

The Craftsman CMCM300 weighs in at a modest 2.2 pounds as a bare tool, and 3.6 pounds with a 4.0Ah battery. It measures 8.8 inches from tip to tail, and the tool body is just over 5 inches wide. While this is primarily a one-handed tool, there is ample room for you to use a second hand to maintain a steady cut.

Ergonomics

Compared to some of the Craftsman V20 tools Iโ€™ve tested, the grip feels a little bit larger, but I think this helps you maintain better control of the tool. The grip is draped in a textured rubber overmold and the directional controls are very similar to a cordless drill. Something we did notice is that thereโ€™s no trigger safety. With that in mind, Iโ€™d recommend removing the battery while transporting the tool to prevent accidental trigger pulls.

Cut Depth Adjustment

Cut depth adjustment

As I mentioned earlier, this tool has a 3/4-inch max cut depth. To adjust the shoe, simply loosen the wingnut on the rear of the shoe and slide it to the appropriate depth. Keep in mind, there arenโ€™t any depth markings, so if precision is key, youโ€™ll need to keep a measuring tape on hand.

Additional Features

  • Compatible with all Craftsman 20V batteries
  • Versatrack compatible for easy storage
  • LED work light

The Craftsman CMCM300 retails for $119 as a bare tool, and comes with a metal cutting wheel, tile wheel, and a multi material wheel. Craftsman backs this tool with a 3-year limited warranty.

The Bottom Line

The Craftsman cordless 3-inch cut-off tool is a great tool to supplement yourย angle grinderย when youโ€™re working in tighter areas, or when you simply want more control. Itโ€™s excellent for cutting thin to medium metal, and also a great option when youโ€™re cutting tile, vinyl, cement board, or drywall to exact fits. While it does have a limited cut capacity, this tool might just save you a few headaches during your next project.
