The Hawthorne was designed with input from a veteran carpenter who needed a boot capable of handling long days that involve kneeling, crouching, and constant movement.

Brunt also emphasizes that the boot is lightweight for a full-leather work boot—around 1 lb 7 oz per boot (size 9). That’s impressive for a mid-height work boot, but we’ll see if there are any trade-offs because of it.

Judging a Book By its Cover

Brunt Hawthorne work boots feature a hiker-style look. While that’s a departure from the popular moc-toe design of the original Marin, hiker designs enjoy a broad appeal across most trades.

The rubber outsole is attached using cement construction and sports a larger lug pattern than we’re used to seeing from Brunt. The wide channels aid in grip on bare ground while also allowing mud and debris to drop away as you walk. This makes them a great option for folks whose work regularly takes them off the beaten path.

Another nice addition is the Brunt Toe and Heel guards. These help preserve the leather from premature wear and tear if you frequently kneel or work on rough surfaces.

Even if you don’t need the extra protection, it doesn’t add a substantial amount of weight or negatively affect the performance. So, if you like the Hawthorne for its other characteristics, there’s no harm in having it.

Under the Surface

Comfort is clearly a priority in the Hawthorne’s design. Inside, there’s a multi-layered insole system with memory foam and cushioning designed to keep your feet comfortable through long shifts. Combined with the Cush’N midsole, it’s a solid combination that makes this a good choice whether you’re working on hard or soft surfaces.

I typically wear a size 11 regular when it comes to boots. When I first put them on, the length was spot-on, but they felt a little tight for my comfort.

Enter Brunt’s Switch-Fit system. Instead of offering separate wide versions, the Hawthorne (and many of Brunt’s work boots) comes with a removable insert that lets you convert the fit from standard (D) to wide (EE). That’s a clever approach for workers who fall somewhere between widths or want extra room with thicker socks.

In my case, removing the bottom insole layer was exactly what the doctor ordered. Once I made that small adjustment, the fit and feel dramatically improved, and the fit was true-to-size.

Note that the Switch-Fit insole is different than the Cush’N insole. If you need the extra width, you don’t have to sacrifice the comfort of the Cush’N insole.

The toe box is much larger than what we typically see from Brunt—similar to what I experience when I’m wearing Keens. This extra room is nice since your toes have a bit more room to spread out, especially later in the day when your feet are more swollen.

Cementing the Relationship

Right out of the box, these boots were fairly comfortable and had a good amount of flex when kneeling down. Break-in time is negligible, and you should be able to wear them for a full shift on day one.

Brunt also highlights that these boots are lightweight—and they’re not lying! My size 11 boots only weigh 1.6 pounds with the extra insole layer removed. That’s pretty impressive when you consider that the comparable CAT Threshold work boots clock in around 2 pounds each!

All of these benefits are due to the cement construction. While direct attach and Goodyear welted boots are stronger connection techniques, it’s awfully tough to beat the out-of-the-box comfort of cement construction work boots.

Maintenance and Care

During my years as a geotechnical driller, I learned that caring for my feet was essential. Moreover, I learned that caring for my boots made them last significantly longer, meaning my annual boot allowance could just go straight into my pocket (shhhh…).

Brunt recommends using their leather conditioner kit to help you get the most out of your work boots. This is a proprietary blend of mink oil, beeswax, and natural additives that helps protect and extend the life of your leather.

The mink oil replenishes natural oils, while the beeswax seals them in and adds a barrier against scuffs and tough jobsite conditions. With a little extra care plus the protection of the Brunt Toe and Heel, you might be surprised how much life you get from your Hawthornes.

These boots are available in sizes ranging from 7 to 14, with half sizes from 7 to 12. The soft toe model retails for $154.99 while the comp toe version is priced at $164.99. This is an incredibly attractive price tag for the average Joe.

Should You Buy Them?

The Brunt Hawthorne work boots focus on the areas that matter most for real jobsite use—all-day comfort, reinforced wear zones, and a versatile design that’s ready for any jobsite. On top of that, the customizable width gives you greater confidence when it comes to getting the proper fit since you can’t try them on before buying.

As I mentioned towards, the hiker style is an attractive option across a wide variety of trades. However, there are a couple things to consider before you buy.

First, these boots utilize cement construction. While this does help keep the cost down and provide more flexibility in the mid-sole, they don’t typically last as long as a traditional welted boot and cannot be re-soled. Second, they’re only available in a 6-inch version, so if you need/prefer a taller boot, these might not be the best option.

For me, the Brunt lineup screams value. Not in a bad way, but rather, they give you a practical blend of durability and comfort that works well across the trades. Not to mention, you get rock solid performance without spending a fortune on footwear.
