Clamshell Packaging Sucks, But These Life Hacks Make it Easier to Open

Knowing how to open clamshell packaging remains one of lifeโ€™s greatest frustrations. Its tough, rigid nature is beneficial for manufacturers, since it makes the product easy to display, cuts down on shoplifting, and reduces returns. On the other end of the sale, itโ€™s a nightmare for us as consumers. Iโ€™m pretty sure it has its origins somewhere in the bowels of a corporate meeting at either Samโ€™s Club or Costco as a method of reducing shrinkage (retail theft).

Originally created as a protective shell that could be easily opened, clamshell packaging eventually morphed into something inhumanโ€ฆsadistic, even. While it achieved its ends, it did so at the expense of our collective sanity.

Weโ€™re here to help you fight back.

Method 1: Can Opener

The method that really intrigued me was the can opener method. Yep, your plain old household can opener can be a Godsend when it comes to opening that clamshell packaging. Admittedly, I was skeptical. But then I tried it.

It worked.

I kind of wished that I had more clamshell packaging to open up after that. Alas, I needed to get on with my day. Four brand new batteries needed charging, and I had other new toys to play with.

How to Open Clamshell Packaging Using a Can Opener

Start by clamping down on the side of the packaging just like you would a can. I like to start with one of the long sides first. Then, rotate the handle to work your way forward.

When youโ€™re ready for the second side, I find it easier to start with a closed corner. So, if I cut off the right side first, Iโ€™d start in the top left corner and work my way towards the open side from there.

Once you have two sides off, you should be good to go, but feel free to take off a third to make it even easier.

Method 2: Cordless Multi-Cutter or Power Cutter

Cordless multi-cutters cut an impressive array of materials. Clamshells prove no match for the spinning angular blade on this tool. We took it to town on several packages and always came away pleased with the results.

Think of a cordless multi-cutter like an electric can opener. The blade automatically keeps turning, so all you have to do is guide the tool.

From a tactical standpoint, you attack the packaging similar to the way you do with a can opener. There are a couple of differences, though.

First, getting the cut started is a finicky operation. You have to work the blade around a little until itโ€™s able to bite into that first thick bit of packaging edge.

Second, itโ€™s easier to start on the open side, so once you have the first side off, keep working around in the same direction.

Method 3: Tradesman Shears

Some manufacturers, like Crescent Wiss, make Tradesman Shears, which function like scissors on steroids. They can quickly get through even the toughest clamshell packaging. They basically fill a gap between scissors and metal shears: tough and rigid but with longer blades than standard shears.

Donโ€™t try this with your regular kitchen scissors, though. Youโ€™ll likely bend or break them the first time you try them on clamshell packaging.

Start by cutting off the entire top. Next, cut down each side to create a flap you can pull open and reveal the contents. If you want, itโ€™s easy enough to cut away all four sides.

Of the methods weโ€™re describing, this is the easiest. Even though most people donโ€™t have Tradesman Shears lying around, theyโ€™re less than $20, making them a worthwhile investment.

Method 4: Metal Shears or Aviation Snips

The same metal shears or aviation snips that can cut through thin sheet metal also tackle plastic clamshell packaging. Essentially, they work similarly to scissors, but theyโ€™re much stronger. This ends up being the easiest method for many people.

Just like using scissors, start by working your way around the outer edge of the packaging. Once youโ€™ve cut enough of the edge away (two sides can do it, but three makes it easier), pop open the middle and retrieve your treasure.

Weโ€™ve used this method too many times to remember. It works every time and doesnโ€™t make a messโ€”or leave you with any injuries!

Method 5: Utility Knife

Using a utility knife to open clamshell packaging is one of the more dangerous methodsโ€”so use good judgment and donโ€™t say we didnโ€™t warn you!

Start by tracking the contour of the tool until you cut it free and can easily peel away the plastic. You often have to put quite a bit of pressure into the cut, so work slowly and methodically.

Just be sure to note the position of your hands while you cut, and donโ€™t put yourself in a position where the blade can cut across your hands or fingers if it slips.

Also, be sure to only expose a very small portion of the blade. Most utility knives let you do this, and it can really help minimize injury if the blade slips or goes where you donโ€™t want it.

Method 6: The Last Resortโ€”Pocket Knife

We actually hate using a pocket knife to open clamshell packaging unless nothing else is available. You need a really sharp knife for it to work. The method is similar to using a utility knife. The problem with a pocket knife is that you canโ€™t minimize blade exposure. Itโ€™s all or nothing.

How to Open Clamshell Packaging with a Pocket Knife

Start by inserting your knife into the packaging point-first, and parallel to the flat side of the packaging, like youโ€™re trying to slide the blade underneath it. Once you pierce the packaging, the blade easily slices its way around. Work it around the packageโ€ฆ always keeping the blade moving away from you.

Eventually, youโ€™ll slice open enough of the material to peel it away and remove the contents safely.
