Withย the recent reintroduction of the Kobalt mechanics tools, we have beenย eager to put our hands on a set to see what they are all about. Theย Kobalt 63 Piece Mechanics Tool Set (0338513) that we got in includesย some of the most common 1/4โณ and 3/8โณ drive Metric and SAEย sizes sockets that you will need. Things like a 72-tooth ratchet and fully polished chrome plating on all the tools come standard, along with laser etching and red/blue colored markings for easy identification of SAE (standard) and MM (metric) sizes. With anย ever-growing line of mechanics tools, it looks like Kobalt Tools is notย just about quality, but also variety.
Revamped Tools and Sets
Weย knew something was up a while back when we went into our local Loweโsย store and noticed the yellow discount tags on all the current Kobaltย mechanics tool sets. There were all kinds of speculation going around as to what was going on, but we got an insiderโs view of the scenario when we were flown up to Charlotte to take part in a media event in Charlotte, NC, announcing and demoing the newย Kobalt mechanics tools. About a year ago, Loweโs solicited the help of the guys atย Hendrick Motorsportsย to help them diagnose some of the deficiencies with their current (outgoing)ย mechanics tool line.
The feedback from the guys at Hendrick wasย overwhelming in that they not only gave pointers on the problem areas but also conveyed what they expect fromย their tools as they work on some of the best NASCAR vehicles in theย business. Using the valuable criticism and insightย from Hendrick, combined with the market research that Loweโs did,ย they basically surmised that they needed to come out withย โMac-qualityโ tools at a Loweโs price point. They alsoย recognized the need to offer more variety in their packaged andย individual item SKUs. Thatโs a pretty tall order, but Loweโs spentย about a year in development just to make sure they got it right.
Kobalt 63 Piece Mechanics Tool Set Features
All the new tools come with full-polished chrome, and allย sharp edges have been removed. Each socket has its size laser-etchedย on the side in large print, and there is a colored strip around theย base of each. Red indicates that it is an SAE (standard) size, andย Blue means MM (metric). Finally, with just a glance, you can tell ifย you grabbed the right socket.
The new ratchets have been upgraded toย a 72-tooth count, which in the real world equates to only having toย turn the ratchet five degrees to get it to click. The ratchetsย continue to include Kobaltโs quick-release function that makesย swapping out sockets and accessories faster (itโs even been improvedย somewhat). As if this were not enough, the new tools are actuallyย specified at 150% of the minimum requirements of the Americanย National Standard Institute (ANSI) and the American Society ofย Mechanical Engineers (ASME) specifications.
Another thing that jumpedย out to us was the huge increase in the quality of the storage case. Each item is securely held in place and wonโt budge until youย actually go to take it out. We gave an open case a good shake, andย nothing came loose. Two small things that were done to the case thatย make a big difference are that the hinge has an actual metal pin and theย latches are more sturdy and secure. On top of that, the tools allย come pre-loaded in the case, so itโs ready to use right out of theย gate. No longer will you need to go home and open up severalย plastic baggies of sockets before you can organize and locate whatย you need for your job. Itโs a subtle, but very welcome, feature.
Toย ensure a more enjoyable shopping experience and to help solidify the Kobalt brand, Loweโs is not only expanding the entire line of mechanic tool sets but is now going to offer nearlyย all the tools as individual items. What this means is that, with theย full No Questions Asked, hand tool warranty, you can walk into aย Loweโs store with your broken socket or wrench, go find theย replacement item, and be on your way. With a larger assortment ofย individual tools now, you donโt have to purchase a whole set to get that one replacement item you need.
But wait, thereโs moreโฆ Inย addition to the lifetime tool warranty, Loweโs is also launching a brand new service called โSockets For Life,โ which shouldย prove to be a real success if you ask us. The premise is that afterย you register your tool set, if you have a socket that gets lost orย stolen, simply call them up and they will mail you the replacementย for a nominal shipping fee (they estimated $4 or $5).
Testingย and Use
Givenย that the new line of Loweโs mechanics tools has received theย blessing of the guys at Hendrick Motorsports, anything that I willย ever do with them will pale in comparison. But in any case, I haveย kept the kit on the bench in the shop and have had ample time in theย last few weeks to do everything from assembling a tool stand to changingย a headlight in one of our company vehicles. In all honesty, I couldย not find any faults in the set โ especially given the price.ย Everything works just as I expected it would, and everything has a high-quality feel to it.
Now I know that many mechanics friends willย instantly hone in on the small engraving on the side of each socketย where it says โTaiwanโ and call that a negative. Theย reality, however, is that in todayโs global manufacturing market,ย the world has become smaller and the distance from โbadโ toย โgoodโ quality has less to do with geographic locations andย more to do with being an active participant in the design and qualityย control process.
While I wonโt mention names here, I have used someย of the best names in the mechanics tool business, but the trick withย these guys is that they cost anywhere from 3 to 6 times as much, theyย donโt work on the weekends, and they definitely wonโt show up at myย house when something breaks. There is a lot to be said for a companyย that, no matter where its products are made, will stand behind themย and offer free replacement if something goes wrong. The idea that I can show up at my local Loweโs store on a Friday night at 9 pm and get a replacement makes me think that this is a pretty good deal.
Conclusion
Theย Kobalt 63 Piece Mechanics Tool Set is just one of the many new toolย sets that Loweโs will be rolling out over the next quarter, alongย with more varieties of individual tools. To us, the new line ofย Kobalt mechanics tools seems like a good way to go if you are aย mechanic just starting out, or even if you are just looking for someย really high-quality tools at a great Loweโs price. For our Value rating, we gave this tool set a well-deserved 9/10 because, dollar for dollar, you wonโt find a better deal that offers the quality, quantity, or warranty out there.
For our Performance rating, we gave this tool set an 8/10, thanks to the nice-quality storage case, the broad assortment of SAE and Metric sockets, and the new 72-toothย ratchet design. This is a very much reborn set of tools from Kobaltย Tools.
